Letters to the Menace.

Everything about the app, the beta and your data comes to one address, and a person reads it. The questions that come up most are answered below.

Say which iPhone you have and, if it is about a scan, the title and issue number and what the app said. A person reads it and replies.

The letters

The usual suspects.

A reader asks

The app named the wrong issue.

The Menace replies

It happens, rarely, and it should not: the app only names a comic when it is sure. Email the title, the issue number and what the app said instead, and we will look at why. You do not need to send the photo: it never left your phone, so we do not have it either.

A reader asks

It asked me "which one is it?"

The Menace replies

Then it was not sure, and it would rather ask than guess. Pick the cover that matches yours from the ones it shows, or scan again with the corner box and the barcode in view. If none of them is yours, type the cover in and it is filed as what you say it is.

A reader asks

Hunt Mode went past a comic without buzzing.

The Menace replies

Hunt Mode flags a comic only when it has identified it for sure, and only when there is something to say about it: a key, a gap in one of your runs, a character on screen, or a copy you already own. A comic it is not sure of goes by in silence. Hold the cover still for a moment with the title or barcode in view, or scan it properly afterwards.

A reader asks

It says "pence copy (likely)". Which is it?

The Menace replies

The price box shows a UK price only, and the publisher was printing pence copies at that date, but the catalogue could not confirm a pence printing for this issue. Check it named the right issue, then look at the box yourself. A printed price sits inside the box in the cover's own ink; a sticker or stamp sits on top of it. All seven verdicts, explained on page 3.

A reader asks

It says my comic is not in the catalogue.

The Menace replies

Then it is newer than the copy of the catalogue on your phone. New releases are added in app updates, so it will turn up. You can add it to My Comics now with your own notes.

A reader asks

Can it value my comics?

The Menace replies

No, and it will not pretend to. It links you to recent eBay UK sold listings for the issue instead. Price guidance in pounds is on the what's coming list, and it launches only when it is built from real UK sales.

A reader asks

Which iPhones does it run on?

The Menace replies

It is iPhone only for now, and there is no Android version yet. Hunt Mode needs iOS 16 and an iPhone XS or later. The App Store page lists the minimum iOS version for the rest of the app when it goes on the store.

A reader asks

Does it need a signal?

The Menace replies

Reading the cover, naming the issue and Hunt Mode all happen on the phone, with no signal. A connection is used only to fetch app and catalogue updates, and when you tap the eBay link.

A reader asks

How do Screen Alerts and the signing lists know what I own?

The Menace replies

They check your collection on your phone. The list of film and TV projects and the convention guest lists travel to the phone with the catalogue, and the comparison happens there. Nothing about your collection is sent anywhere.

A reader asks

Can I get my collection out?

The Menace replies

Yes. My Comics exports the whole collection as a spreadsheet, with your grades, prices, notes and signatures. It is your file; keep it wherever you like.

Your data

How to delete your data.

  • Cover photos, your collection and your scan history. All of it lives on your phone and none of it is uploaded, so there is nothing for us to delete. Delete the app and everything it kept goes with it. Export your collection first if you want to keep it.
  • The beta list. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Or email hello@mintmenace.com and we will remove your address.
  • Anything else. Email and ask. You have the right to see what we hold about you and to have it erased. The privacy policy has the detail.
